Blind Plea is an exploration of justice and race in America. The podcast tells the story of Deven Grey, a young Black woman who shot and killed her abusive white partner in self-defense. But instead of being exonerated, Grey was offered a “blind plea”: plead guilty and receive an unknown sentence. As a Black woman in Alabama, Grey did the only thing she could: she took the plea.
Over the course of nine episodes, Flock unravels the complex web of forces that led to Grey’s conviction, including systemic racism, domestic violence, and the Stand Your Ground law. She also examines the broader implications of blind pleas, which are increasingly being used in American courts.
Liz Flock is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who has covered crime and justice for over a decade. She has reported for The Washington Post, ABC News, and The Associated Press, and her work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Rolling Stone.
